Winner of “Transcend” Cover Art Contest: “Stars” by Karen Boissonneault-Gauthier

Synkroniciti is thrilled to announce the winner of our “transcend” issue cover contest, Karen Boissonneault-Gauthier, an indigenous visual artist, writer and photographer residing in Stittsville, Ontario, Canada. The piece is called “Stars” and it evokes a sense of childlike wonder and whimsy, even as it hints at the complexity of humankind’s relationship to nature and space. Resembling a timelapse photograph full of motion and light, this digital artwork draws the eye and tweaks the mind. We can’t quite be certain if these astronauts are hanging or capturing the North Star, famous as a guide for navigation. In even our best moments, when we are striving and reaching for transcendence, humans have a tendency to possess and take rather than acknowledge our dependence on the universe, which ultimately possesses us. We are the universe’s children.

Karen Boissonneault-Gauthier is a Canadian indigenous photographer and visual artist. The stars aligned and her determination to be published in Synkroniciti rewarded her with their cover. Finally! When she’s not walking her Siberian Husky under the Northern Lights, she designs with Art of Where.
