Artist Henry Neubig makes astonishing paintings with Louisiana dirt. Digging in five different counties, Neubig has a palette of eight colors, all iron oxides. By mixing the paints together and adding water and egg yolk (tempera) he produces a lovely world of earth tones, which you can see in the paintings represented here. It hearkens back to a time when all artists mixed their own paints from natural materials, a skill which has become a rarity. You can watch him work here.
