Look and Listen #18: Kent Monkman’s Paintings

Kent Monkman is a Cree visual artist working in multiple media. This particular short film explores the process and intent behind two large paintings created for exhibition in the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Envisioning his feminine alter-ego at various points in history, Monkman integrates European historical painting traditions with indigenous understanding. The result acknowledges the beauty of European techniques and forms while bringing to the forefront a point of view suppressed for centuries.
