Synkroniciti is pleased to welcome back Canadian photographer (and writer) Kerri Merriam, who won the cover contest for our Haunting issue, with two captivating photographs that explore possibility and expectation through apertures.
“What the Heart Wants” presents a heart-shaped opening cut into a wooden fence, framing a tranquil lake and rocky outcropping. A bird, perhaps a turtle, floats on the water. The idyllic natural scene beckons, yet the man-made barrier denies us entry. Desire is awakened, but fulfillment is withheld.
“The Light” shifts to a tunnel carved through stone, a brief passageway along a path or narrow road. Light plays across the textured walls, animating the rock and drawing us forward toward brightness at the tunnel’s end. The imagination surges, wondering why and how we are compelled into this journey.
Together, these photographs form a dialogue between longing and movement: one image arrests us at the threshold of beauty, the other propels us toward transformation. Kerri reminds us that vision itself is a passage, sometimes obstructed, sometimes illuminated, always alive with possibility and expectation.

Kerri Merriam is a Canadian photographer and author, writing in several genres. She currently has two fiction novels published, entitled Where the Trees Know You and The White Lake, as well as two smaller collections of poetry: Rhymes and Reasons, and The Inner Voice, all under the author name Kerri Merriam-Buckton. She has also had works published in various anthologies.
When she’s not writing or out taking photos of whatever catches her eye, you could find her listening to music and singing along in her car, or daydreaming of travelling the world. Hopefully not both at once. She is also a proud wife and mother to three children, who are her world and biggest supporters.
