“Vulnerable” Featured Artist Sabrina Mazzola Roguljic

Synkroniciti is excited to welcome back visual artist Sabrina Mazzola Roguljic, previously featured in our “Labyrinth” and “Hidden” issues in 2020, based in France. She graces our “Vulnerable” issue with three insightful multimedia paintings, acrylic and pastel on paper with various additional elements. “As an art therapist, I witness and welcome all sorts of emotions on a daily basis. I have a tendency to visualise them while other people are sharing. I’m trying to exteriorise through art the inner monologue of feelings that are accessed.” The first of these visualizations is On the surface, which was a finalist for our cover art contest. The contrasting textures of acrylic paint, pastel, painted collage paper, and ridged paper combine to create a harmonious and intriguing composition: black, white and grey accented with a vivid yellow-orange. These splashes of color symbolize those things, good and bad, that we suppress in ourselves. They always find their way back to the surface, so we might as well acknowledge them. In The sadness passing by the accents are green-grey and somber, more evocative of rain and water.  “Sadness is felt both like a deep splashing wave and as a heavy sensation of being stuck. The black form, a “cloud,” is sewn onto paper, attached.” Sabrina uses white  thread on black paint to illustrate how we hold on to our dark feelings, our clouds, not letting them pass. Histoire de Coeur (Love story) utilizes a palette of soft browns, greens and reds. It feels very organic and nest-like. There seems to be a bird in the nest structure, perhaps signifying hope or transcendence. The use of charcoal allows for texture that approaches skin, fur and vegetation. The heart is a place where things grow. Sabrina’s talent for translating human emotion into color, form and texture is extraordinary.
