“Recovery” Featured Artist Katharine Weinmann

Synkroniciti is excited to welcome back Canadian poet and photographer Katharine Weinmann, the winner of our Recovery Cover Art Contest, with three gorgeous photographs celebrating the restorative powers of nature.

The pink blooms of tenderly wave dreamily in the wind and light, reminding us to recognize the loveliness of nature around us. Flowers do not only heal our spirits, but sustain our bodies by supporting the water cycle, preventing erosion and providing food for pollinators.

Our cover is from the compost, a colorful and eye catching photograph of spent flowers ready for the compost heap. We see the unavoidable destruction of beauty, a chaos of color and texture, still lovely, which releases seeds, the promise of new life, the continuation of the plant’s genetic code. It is not unusual in some species, after a particularly difficult season, for a plant to flower copiously so that, if the mother plant doesn’t have enough resources to survive, the smaller plants have a better chance. People go through similar post-traumatic blooms.

Finally, gliding with the blues shows a bird flying through a cloudless blue sky over a turquoise structure. There is a sense of escape into the beyond, of soaring above the every day, and a sense of harmony of color and shape. We are reminded that there are moments in our lives when we feel buoyed and happy. Katharine reminds us to save up these memories for the difficult seasons. Beauty surprises us everywhere and it is not superfluous.
