“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
―Faramir, J.R.R. Tolkien,
The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings
Interesting quote given today’s headlines. What are we defending in Syria?
Thank you. I think it is difficult to know what we are defending there. I would like to believe we are going to help humans that are being murdered. It is hard to know if an image is trustworthy and there are certainly many sides at play in Syria. It isn’t as simple as one side is wrong and the other right. Our motives are most likely mixed as well.
