Is this quote by Saint-Expery in the public domain? I want to use it as the epigraph for my memoir.
Hi Kathryn! It’s a great quote. Copyright status depends on where you live. Airman’s Odyssey in the public domain in Canada (50 years from the death of the author) and in parts of Europe (70 years from the death of the author) but not in the United States (95 years from the death of the author). Saint-Exupery died in 1944, so thats 1994 in Canada, 2014 in much of Europe (not France), and 2039 for the U.S. However, the quote is such a small portion of the work that I think you could probably use it under fair use, but I’d check with someone who works with copyright law to be sure.
