Adrian Angelico is making a bold statement in opera. He is one of a growing number of trans opera singers forging a new path for the future. As a mezzo-soprano, there are many “pants” roles in which women play men. The interviewer here suggests that Adrian could specialize in those (he makes a couple of remarks that make cringe, actually). I love Adrian’s answer, that he has been playing a woman for so long that it is not difficult for him to do that onstage. Bravo, sir!
What a beautiful voice!
It should be noted also that Adrian is of the Sámi people, an indigenous people of northern Norway, Finland and Sweden, as well as the Murmansk Oblask of Russia.
Look and Listen will be expanding from the POC realm where we began the series. There are other marginalized voices that also need to be heard.
