Poet and writer Kathy Labrum McVittie returns to Synkroniciti with “beyond the rite,” opening our new issue with a sparkling invitation to that space beyond all of our pre-conceived and culturally-shaped notions. This is the field of which Rumi spoke and it is the perfect place to begin sharing our ideas of ritual. Kathy manages to find the perfect balance of wonder and irreverence, creating a fertile atmosphere for empathy and good-natured contemplative play.

Kathy Labrum McVittie is a biologist, life-writing companion and dancer, straddling the imaginal and the seen. She’s fretted the dilemmas of genetics, global resources, waste, and ethical recycling since the 1970s. In 2020 she joined The Way of the Buzzard in north-west England, using their core shamanic toolkit to earth her voice. Her reindeer dream-drum, called ‘Magic,’ arrived after she’d ordered ‘Courage’. So Magic stayed, her handle set with thrush-speckled merlinite.

Kathy is now playing her fourth childhood (and not counting).
