Dignity Featured Artist Kathi Crawford

Synkroniciti is thrilled to welcome back Houston poet and writer Kathi Crawford, who won our cover art contest for Dignity with her collage Strings, adding visual art to her creative palette. Collage is a powerful medium for engaging the subconscious around abstract concepts like dignity, offering a dreamlike language that speaks through inference, symbolism, and synchronicity.

Red is a striking collage dominated by its titular color. A high-heeled shoe stands upon a stone pedestal, suggesting the elevated place beauty and pain occupy in our culture. Above it, a woman’s face floats from the darkness, elegant, eyes closed, a small line or tear traversing the area beneath her eyebrow, a subtle exploration of the relationship between beauty and suffering. A brick dispenses Zen wisdom while a heart is offered from a tower. Another heart lies abandoned on the pavement.

The protagonist of Downcast Eyes has a fabric-like texture and appears to have stepped from the late 19th or early 20th century, quite possibly from the canvas of a painter–perhaps Matisse. She gazes downward in melancholy against a backdrop reminiscent of wheat-paste street art in European cities. Looking closer, the imagery hints at the macabre, perhaps even violence. Red is again dominant, although balanced by a moody blue verging on grey. In this very controlled and focused work, Kathi evokes the historical oppression of women within patriarchal and colonial structures.

Strings opens a web of motifs that speak to dignity: agency, freedom, perception, growth, and identity, while also acknowledging shadow themes of coercion, control, and surveillance. The real meets the illusory, leaving us uncertain where one ends and the other begins. A shadow hand holds a fraying cord of control layered over a blighted forest, suggesting that growth has been sacrificed, yet remains available for renewal.

Kathi’s focus on the female experience makes her vision especially poignant. Vulnerability and power dance across these images, revealing the burdens femininity has endured and the possibility of liberation from oppressive traditions.
