The trouble with the safe house was that everyone living there had brought their danger, their fear and their pain through the door. So, while it might provide some respite from my normal routine and its daily doses of domestic violence, it was far from safe. I didn’t know what the other women had been through or what coping strategies they had found. Sometimes I felt their eyes searching me. Sometimes I did the searching.
